The challenge
A border-crossing program moving large volumes of pre-vetted travelers needs to verify identity in seconds, not minutes — and needs enough independent biometric factors that no single spoofed input gets someone through. In the early 2000s, almost none of the enabling hardware or integration patterns existed off the shelf; it had to be built.
What we built
Designed and built working prototypes across the biometric stack for a federal border-security trusted-traveler initiative.
- Prototyped fingerprint capture and verification workflows
- Prototyped a facial-recognition identity-matching system
- Prototyped hand-geometry biometric capture as an additional, independent factor
- Integrated RF-enabled smart cards as the credential each biometric result was bound to at enrollment
- Delivered working demonstrations under a compressed program timeline, ahead of production-grade hardware and standards maturing industry-wide
How it works
Each modality — fingerprint, face, hand geometry — ran as an independent capture-and-match pipeline, with results bound to a traveler's RF smart-card credential at enrollment. Layering independent biometric factors meant no single sensor or spoofed input was sufficient on its own to pass verification.
Results
- Working multi-modal biometric prototypes delivered years before this technology reached mainstream border-security deployment
- Early, hands-on work in the same modality mix — fingerprint, face, smart card — that trusted-traveler and border-security programs went on to adopt broadly
- Proved out integration patterns for combining independent biometric factors under one enrollment workflow
